Things To Do With Kids In Red Deer

Red Deer has many amenities and there are many things that one can do with their families both indoor and outdoor. From the many beautiful parks that one can bring their kids to get outside and play to the indoor playground on those cold winter days.

There are a great many of outdoor parks that kids can enjoy, and the city of Red Deer has made sure that each neighborhood has at least one park in the area for easy access. There is also a spray park, Rotary Recreation Park, downtown for those hot days in the summer. This park has something for all ages, from tennis courts, the spray park, skating, swimming (indoor and outdoor), picnic area, and horseshoe pitches.

The Kin Kanyon park area is surrounded by the beautiful trees of the large green space that runs through Red Deer. There are also picnic tables and fire pits to enjoy the area to the fullest. Walking paths through the trees and a fountain/wading spot is also located here. It is a great place to take the kids and has the feeling that you are not in the middle of a city.

Bower Ponds of course is a definitely wonderful place to go as a family. They have so many different events and activities to enjoy that you are bound to find something for everyone. In the summer there is the walking trails, playground, fishing, amphitheater, Cronquist House, and the pollinator park. You can rent paddle boats, canoes, kayaks, water balls and surrey bikes. The winter one gets to enjoy skating, and any equipment needed is available for rental. If you get hungry or thirsty you can go to the café in the pavilion.

Bower Ponds also hosts game night called Red Deer’s Board Game Café. There is over 200 board or card games to choose from and there is no reservation required, just show up! There is food available for purchase at the café during game nights.

The Great Chief Park is the premier outdoor sports park in Red Deer. It has 2 baseball and 2 fastball diamonds, soccer and football fields, picnic area, horseshoe pits, 8-hole pitch and putt and also other various park amenities. Another great place to take the kids in the summer is Discovery Canyon. It is located on the Red Deer river. A lazy river was created for kids to enjoy floating down on tubes (rentals are available). There is a beach area with a shallow wade area and a concession. With lots of trees surrounding the area it helps beat the heat! There are many other parks too that has playgrounds, fields to play a game on, exercise parks, skate parks, mountain bike park and more.

Of course, there are many more things to do in Red Deer other than just parks for kids. There are several swimming pools:

The Collicutt Centre is more of a water park style pool, featuring a wave pool, lazy river, water slide, water playground, tots pool and of course the hot tubs and steam rooms. The Collicutt also features a large field house and climbing wall to enjoy sports all year round. There is a skating arena, golf and batting cage walking track, fitness and wellness studio and can purchase food at the Good Earth Café. The Exelta gymnastics club and Dance Magic Studio also meet here for their classes.

Dawe Centre Pool has two water slides, a leisure pool, spray pool, play pool, lane pool and the hot tub. The Dawe also has a gymnasium for kids to be able to play sports and an arena for skating. There is a fitness area and exercise room available and child minding and day camps for kids. There is also a concession area too to purchase food and meeting rooms to host parties, events or a conference.

Recreation Centre Pool features both an indoor and outdoor pool with diving boards and has lane swimming available. Of course, to relax there is the option of the hot tub and sauna room. Here you can enjoy the fitness studio and exercise room. There is also meeting rooms available to book.

Roland Mitchener Pool has a dive tank that has diving boards that are 1m and 3m. The pool itself is 3.8m deep to allow for high diving. There is the main pool with a slide and lane swimming, and a warmer, shallower pool for smaller kids. There is a gymnasium to enjoy also for a variety of sports.

Canyon Ski Resort is also located here in Red Deer, Alberta. There is 70 acres of terrain that boasts 22 runs and 6 lifts. There are rentals and lessons available and the rustic lodge, cafeteria and lounge are there to enjoy during your day. Passes are also available to purchase. It is a great way to get out skiing without having to drive a long distance.

One other option that we will look at is the indoor playground called the Treehouse. It is located on the north end of Red Deer and has 11,000 square feet of fun! There is rock climbing, ball cannons, a racing zone, 3 23-foot-long slides and more for your kids to enjoy. There is a café there to purchase coffee while you can supervise your kids plus other menu items. Don’t forget to bring socks though!

There are two bowling lanes, laser tag, comic book stores, game night at bower ponds, arcade?, and the lockdown rooms.

As with most towns and cities there are many programs that are available for children to sign up for and you are able to look on the city’s website for the options that are available. It is called the Look n Book. Whatever activity from art and music to sports options and more you will be able to find a great activity that your kids are sure to enjoy.
